NEW DIRECTIONS IN CALLIGRAPHY
Mylar Calligraphy Wall Hangings
Midori Kono Thiel has extended her calligraphic practice to new forms of calligraphy. Her calligraphy on multiple mylar sheets deconstructs characters into individual strokes - in ways that traditional calligraphy would never do - to emphasize the abstract, gestural aspects of calligraphy.→ "Construct/s" exhibition, Wing Luke Museum, Seattle
Midori premiered her mylar calligraphies in the gallery exhibit for the Brush the Sky calligraphy and augmented reality project
2015: "Brush the Sky" Augmented Reality Calligraphy
In East Asia, traditional calligraphy has long been used to "augment" visual paintings. Since 2015 Midori Kono Thiel has extended this tradition into the 21st century in "Brush the Sky," a series of collaborations with her daughter, new media artist Tamiko Thiel. Together they have created city-wide augmented reality artworks that create new spatial narratives in cities throughout the world.→ Brush the Sky website: calligraphy and augmented reality project

The Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific Experience recorded a number of videos of Midori talking about the history and culture of locations in Seattle that are significant to the Japanese American experience.
